Anambra Stakeholders Move to Remove NIN Barrier to Women’s Health Insurance

Anambra Stakeholders Move to Remove NIN Barrier to Women’s Health Insurance

Anambra State Government officials and community stakeholders have agreed to improve health-insurance enrolment for women of child-bearing age and other vulnerable residents. At a roundtable in Nnewi, participants identified the compulsory National Identification Number (NIN) as a major barrier. Many indigent residents, children and elderly people cannot enrol in the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency scheme without it. The group plans to use the ongoing ward-to-ward NIN registration exercise to encourage eligible residents to obtain their NINs and sign up for health insurance. The initiative also seeks to strengthen maternal and child healthcare, community awareness and referrals from traditional birth attendants across six Anambra local government areas.

Removing the NIN barrier sounds helpful, but the agreement should lead to a clear enrolment process, not just another roundtable.

The next step should be simple guidance at community level, explaining who qualifies and what alternative identification will be accepted.
