Lagos to Launch Paid On-Street Parking Pilot in Ikeja

Lagos to Launch Paid On-Street Parking Pilot in Ikeja

The Lagos State Parking Authority will roll out a paid on-street parking scheme in selected areas, starting with a pilot in Ikeja. The initiative was announced during a stakeholder meeting with the Ikeja Local Government chairman and council management. The general manager explained the plan aims to improve parking order, ease traffic congestion and create local jobs. Councils will support the rollout and share in revenues based on their level of cooperation. Responsibility for parking management has moved from local governments to the state agency. Successful cooperation and public awareness campaigns are needed to prepare motorists before the scheme begins.

I doubt people will welcome paying extra. Many drivers fit other streets, and businesses may lose customers to avoid fees.

It's interesting they chose Ikeja for the first phase, but enforcement and payment logistics often determine success more than the pilot location.

Commuters might avoid penalties by using parking apps or preloading credits, but clear signage and support lines are essential during the pilot.
