Bandit Kingpin: ‘We May Be Uneducated, But We’re Experts with the AK-47’

A suspected bandit kingpin addressed supporters in Dutsenma LGA, Katsina State, declaring that his group never attended school but has mastered the AK-47 rifle. In a video reported by a military news outlet, he raised his weapon as the crowd cheered. He challenged the value of formal education, declaring, “While you gather books on your shelves, we have gathered AK-47 rifles.” He accused government negotiators of failing to honour past agreements, saying many of his members remain detained in Katsina, Kano and Abuja despite promises of release. The kingpin warned that fighters could disappear into the forests if dialogue stalls. He added that his group would return for talks only if authorities fulfil their commitments and free the detained members. Despite the threats, he expressed willingness to honour future invitations provided previous terms are respected.

What does it say about our security policies that a self-proclaimed uneducated bandit could boast such weapon mastery?

I agree. It's worrying that such expertise exposes weaknesses in our security protocols and oversight.

Maybe it says more about resource gaps than policies. Training and oversight seem to matter more than stiff guidelines on paper.

It's striking how confident he sounded despite admitting no formal education, but handling assault rifles isn't a skill learned overnight.

Focusing on community policing and local drills might help civilians report suspicious training grounds before these groups gain too much firepower.
