EFCC Jails 10 for Spraying Naira, Offers ₦100k Fine Option
The EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate secured convictions against ten people for defacing naira notes at social events. They were tried before Federal High Courts in Asaba and Benin City under Section 21(3) of the CBN Act. All pleaded guilty to spraying money while dancing at weddings and parties. Eight were sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment each, with an option to pay a ₦100,000 fine. The other two received six months or the same fine in a separate ruling. Each convict signed an undertaking to uphold good conduct and respect the national currency. The EFCC says it will continue cracking down on naira abuse and urges Nigerians to comply with laws safeguarding the integrity of legal tender.
