Abuja Court Jails Boko Haram Survivor Nine Years for Failing to Report Terrorists, Then Orders His Release
Justice Peter Odo Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Ali Kolo, a Boko Haram survivor, to nine years in prison for failing to report the group's activities. Kolo lost part of his leg in a 2013 attack by the terrorists in Borno State. Prosecutors said he never informed security agencies about the group’s movements in 2017. He pleaded guilty to one count of concealing information under the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2013. The judge acknowledged that Kolo’s hospitalisation after being shot had prevented him from notifying authorities. He ruled that Kolo had already spent over ten years in detention since his 2017 arrest and ordered his immediate release. In a related case, Ibrahim Buba from Borno State received a ten-year jail term for the same offence. Justice Lifu commuted the sentence to start from Buba’s 2023 arrest.
