India has approved the purchase of S-400 air-defense systems, transport aircraft and strike drones from Russia as part of a major military modernization drive. The package also covers armor-piercing tank ammunition, artillery pieces, aerial surveillance gear and coast-guard hovercraft. It includes a life-extension program for Su-30 jets and a separate 4.45 billion-rupee contract for Tunguska anti-aircraft systems, according to Reuters. In the current fiscal year ending March 31, India cleared 55 defense proposals valued at 6.73 trillion rupees and signed contracts for 503 additional projects.
