Pretoria Alleges Ghana, Nigeria Spread Fake Xenophobia Claims to Isolate South Africa
South Africa’s government says Ghana and, to a lesser extent, Nigeria are leading a misinformation campaign to portray the country as a pariah over recent xenophobic attacks. Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya accused a diplomatic representative of deliberately misrepresenting official exchanges and urged verifiable reporting. Magwenya highlighted President Ramaphosa’s active engagements with global and African partners—from meetings with the French president and UNESCO through to talks with SACU neighbours and leaders in East and Southern Africa—to show South Africa remains firmly connected on the continent. He dismissed claims of widespread attacks on Ghanaians, noting only a single non-fatal incident, and warned that calls to nationalise South African assets would backfire. Some analysts suggest Accra’s focus on xenophobia may be aimed at diverting attention from domestic scandals involving cronyism in Ghana.
