Osun Police Defend SSG Residence Search, Cite Cash and Voter Materials
The Osun State Police Command has defended its July 29 operation at the residence of the Secretary to the State Government, saying it was based on credible intelligence and was not politically motivated. Police said officers recovered cash, voter-related registers, Permanent Voter Cards and other documents during the operation. It added that one person arrested at the premises was already on its watch list over previous serious criminal investigations. The command said the SSG, who later honoured a police invitation, was not unlawfully detained and was granted administrative bail after questioning. It said investigators are examining conflicting explanations over the recovered cash, which was described publicly as party logistics but reportedly linked by some suspects to an empowerment programme. Police said it is investigating the total circumstances surrounding the materials and cash ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election. The command urged political actors not to interfere with the investigation and pledged to remain neutral throughout the election period.
