RSUTH & Smile Train Launch National Cleft Lip and Palate Conference with Free Surgeries
Rivers State University Teaching Hospital recently kicked off the Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Association of Cleft Lip and Palate at its Modular Theatre. The pre-conference activities include complimentary reconstructive surgeries for children and adults born with cleft conditions. Tagged “Strengthening Networks to Improve Cleft Awareness, Promote Early Detection, and Streamline Referral Pathways,” this marks the first time the NACLP conference is held in the South-South region. The partnership between RSUTH and Smile Train is providing free, safe, and effective treatment to relieve families of the financial burden. Speakers stressed that cleft lip and palate are congenital and not caused by witchcraft or curses. They urged parents and guardians to seek early care to restore appearance and function, prevent stigma, and enhance quality of life. The four-day event also features specialist training for healthcare professionals, reinforcing comprehensive cleft care across Rivers State and its neighbouring communities.
