Traditional rulers, chiefs and dignitaries from Owu Kingdom gathered in Abeokuta, Ogun State, for the installation of former national basketball coach Chief Lawrence Alabi Adeoye Adelanwa as Baba-Ijo of the African Church Cathedral, Owu, Ita-Iyalode. The ceremony was led by the Archbishop of the Ogun Province, who described the role as a sacred duty demanding dedication to church growth and service to the community. He urged family members and church leaders to support Chief Adelanwa in his new responsibilities. The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, council chiefs and other traditional figures attended the event. A fundraising drive was held to complete the church’s administrative office complex, with Chief Adelanwa’s daughter donating ₦500,000 on behalf of the family and other donors pledging support. In his response, Chief Adelanwa thanked God, the church and all guests for the honour. He pledged renewed commitment to spiritual leadership and the church’s development. The programme featured thanksgiving prayers, gospel music performances and the presentation of commemorative portraits.

His leadership on the court doesn't automatically translate to spiritual guidance; church communities may expect different qualities from a Baba-Ijo.
