Delays in Key Witness Testimony Threaten Prosecution of Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele

The trial of former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele may collapse after repeated delays in presenting key witnesses. The federal government told the FCT High Court that Commissioner of Police Elohor Edwin Okpoziakeo and President Tinubu’s special investigator Jim Obazee are unavailable, risking a dismissal over eight adjournments beyond the legal limit. Without their testimony on the missing $6.23 million from the Abuja branch, the court could drop the case for lack of evidence. Justice Hamza Muazu ordered the EFCC to produce its lead witness by April 27 or face sanctions. Obazee’s December report to President Tinubu exposed multiple irregularities and recommended prosecuting Emefiele, former SGF Boss Mustapha and others. Analysts warn that barring Obazee and turning co-accused into government witnesses could clear Emefiele and his associates.

It seems odd that key witnesses from the police and the president's special investigator remain perpetually unavailable.

We shouldn't assume intentional stalling before understanding any legitimate security or scheduling concerns behind the delays.

Maybe the court should impose strict deadlines and penalties to discourage unjustified postponements and ensure timely testimony.
