Atiku Warns Opposition Against Zoning 2027 Ticket Solely to the South

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned opposition parties against insisting that their 2027 presidential ticket be zoned exclusively to the South. He argues that no incumbent president has ever been defeated by a challenger from the same region, and adopting that strategy would amount to “entering the contest already defeated.” Atiku said politics should be guided by coalition-building and electoral arithmetic rather than emotional appeals or selective moral arguments. He noted that the South has held power for about 18 years in the Fourth Republic, and extending rule in the name of equity would deepen existing regional imbalances. While affirming the Southeast’s legitimate claim to the presidency, Atiku warned against reducing that aspiration to transactional politics.
