The Olodo Tradition: A Deep-Rooted Challenge in Black Communities

I believe the so-called Olodo phenomenon goes beyond a Gen Z uprising. It is a longstanding tradition in black communities that predates social media trends. In education, connections often trump hard work when it comes to rewards. Online, inspiring productivity content from black creators is rare. Most posts focus on leisure, humor or even vulgarity. In governance and development, aesthetics sometimes matter more than functionality. We praise beautiful facades even when hospitals lack essential equipment. Massive projects get approved with borrowed funds and inflated property values, knowing the public will applaud the spectacle. This Olodo tradition touches academic research, political decisions and cultural attitudes. We seldom celebrate science or value addition. It’s time to confront this pattern and demand a shift toward substance over show.

It's interesting how mentorship networks still overshadow merit in many schools, even when productivity content promises to change that narrative.

I'm not convinced this is strictly a community tradition; wouldn't you say overemphasis on connections exists in almost every social group?

Building transparent scholarship portals and peer-led study groups could help reward genuine effort rather than relying on private networks.
