Three Arrested Over Viral Fake Posts Defaming Tony Elumelu

Three Arrested Over Viral Fake Posts Defaming Tony Elumelu — 1 of 2
1 / 2

United Bank for Africa says law enforcement have arrested three people for creating and sharing false posts about its chairman, Tony O. Elumelu. The viral claims alleged his daughter tested positive for HIV and that he divorced his wife, all of which UBA has denied as malicious fabrications. In a formal notice, UBA’s corporate communications head described the publications as “entirely fabricated, reckless, and without basis.” The suspects include the originator of the post and two accomplices. Investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected. UBA has warned anyone still sharing the content to stop immediately. The bank says it will pursue civil and criminal action against all involved. This case highlights the legal risks of spreading unverified claims online.

It's interesting that despite UBA's quick denial, the hoax posts spread widely before any correction reached most users.

Arresting a few individuals won't stop rumours if social media keeps prioritizing sensational claims over verified facts.

Platforms and users should flag suspicious posts immediately and verify with official company statements before sharing or commenting further.
