May 4 Hearing to Decide Admissibility of Statements in Emefiele Fraud Case
The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has adjourned until May 4, 2026 for a ruling on whether key statements can be used in the $4.5 billion and ₦2.8 billion fraud trial against former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele and his associate Henry Omolie. Omolie’s defence argues his statements to the EFCC were made under duress. They allege threats, intimidation and the absence of legal counsel during interrogation. They also point out there was no video recording of the statement-taking process. Prosecutors maintain the statements were given freely and in line with due process. They say an EFCC witness already testified that Omolie spoke voluntarily. The mini trial will determine if those disputed statements can be admitted at the main trial. The substantive hearing is set to continue on June 26, 2026.
