Anambra Unveils Tuber Processing Factory to Drive Industrial Farming and Exports

Anambra State has inaugurated a new tuber processing plant in Akwaeze, Anaocha LGA, to kickstart industrial-scale agriculture. The facility, owned by Ideal Agro Allied Produce Ltd, will process yams, cassava and potatoes. It aims to eliminate post-harvest losses and package products for export. The Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Ben Odoemena, said the Soludo administration will shift farmers from subsistence to commercial farming. He noted that the move will ensure food sufficiency and earn farmers foreign exchange. Chief Ikenna Okafor, chairman of the company, added that the project has secured approvals from food agencies in the US, Europe and Nigeria. He explained that proceeds from exports will be remitted to farmers after handling fees, creating jobs and boosting rural incomes.

It sounds promising, but relying on one private company for large-scale processing could leave smallholders vulnerable to monopoly pricing.

Farmers should form cooperatives to coordinate yam, cassava and potato deliveries, ensuring steady factory supply and reducing post-harvest losses.
