Hakimi Rejects AFCON Title, Says Senegal Deserved the Win
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has publicly refused to accept the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations trophy after CAF awarded it to his country. He insists Senegal were the rightful champions following their 1-0 victory in the final. In a firm statement, the Paris Saint-Germain defender explained, “My mum told me to reject the AFCON trophy. I didn’t win the 2025 AFCON. Congratulations to Senegal once again.” He urged his teammates to join him in declining the honour. Hakimi praised Senegal’s performance in the January 18 final. Despite a late penalty protest and walk-off by the Teranga Lions, he acknowledged their hard work and fairness on the field. CAF’s Appeal Board later ruled Senegal’s protest a forfeiture and awarded Morocco a 3-0 win. Senegal plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but Hakimi says he will stand by his decision to reject the title.
