Botswana Rejects Refugee Status for South Africans Fleeing Xenophobia

Botswana’s Labour and Home Affairs Minister Major General (Rtd) Pius Mokgware says the country will not accept as refugees those fleeing xenophobic violence in South Africa ahead of the 30 June deadline. He clarifies that individuals crossing for safety will not qualify for asylum under international law. Instead, Botswana will assist them to return to their home countries and monitor border movements closely. Mokgware notes there has been no surge in visa applications or entries so far. He assures that affected persons will still be treated humanely and in line with international legal obligations. Many citizens fear a sudden influx could strain jobs, housing and public services. Botswana already hosts around 760 refugees at the Dukwi camp and says contingency plans are in place.

What do you think motivated Botswana's decision to deny refugee status to South Africans fleeing xenophobia before the June deadline?

True, it likely ties to resource limits and border control priorities ahead of that deadline.

It's surprising that Botswana refuses asylum to people seeking safety, given the seriousness of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Maybe Botswana's clear deadline prevents a chaotic influx, even if it feels harsh toward those escaping violence next door.

Advocacy groups should approach Botswana's Labour and Home Affairs Ministry to seek temporary protection measures before the June 30 deadline.
