Securing Nigeria: Winning the Battle in the Information Space

Securing Nigeria: Winning the Battle in the Information Space

National security today extends far beyond borders and battlefields. In the digital age, misinformation, cybercrime, extremist propaganda and foreign influence thrive on platforms where millions of Nigerians connect every minute. To defend our state, we must treat strategic communication as a core security tool. Governments need to share accurate information quickly and transparently, closing the vacuum that rumours and malicious actors exploit. Equally crucial is media and information literacy. Citizens—especially young social media users—must verify content before sharing. Schools, civil society, media outlets and government can partner to teach Nigerians to spot fake news and resist online manipulation. A whole-of-society approach is essential. Traditional and religious leaders, journalists, fact-checkers, community groups and digital platforms must work together. With strong cyber hygiene, public-private partnerships and leadership from the National Security Adviser’s office, Nigeria can build resilience and safeguard our information ecosystem.

I understand the concern, but government partnerships with media outlets and civil society might raise the bar on timely fact checks.

I'm not convinced a security focus on social media will address root causes of cybercrime and foreign influence in Nigeria.

We could start by including digital literacy programs in schools and community centers to help people spot fake news online.
