DSS Disavows Role in Sowore’s Kuje Transfer, Launches Probe of Operatives

DSS Disavows Role in Sowore’s Kuje Transfer, Launches Probe of Operatives

Nigeria’s Department of State Services has denied responsibility for the way African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore was taken to Kuje Prison after missing a court hearing. The agency says Sowore chose to use its vehicle following an altercation with prison officials. The DSS director general has ordered an investigation into the conduct of officers involved in the incident. The service says it initially asked Sowore to retract a social media post calling President Tinubu “a criminal” before resorting to court action. Citing similar past cases, the DSS highlights its practice of seeking judicial redress or public apology rather than immediate arrests. Sowore is currently on bail and returns to court today to challenge the revocation of that bail. The DSS assures the public it will maintain professionalism and civility in its operations even under provocation.

What implications could DSS's denial of involvement have on public trust in security agencies and political fairness during elections?

I hear your concern; how exactly might this denial influence voters' confidence in security agencies ahead of elections?

It's curious that DSS would launch an internal probe after denying responsibility, as if expecting to clear itself without independent oversight.

I'm not convinced that Sowore chose the DSS vehicle without pressure; it seems more likely he had little choice after that altercation.

Voter groups and civil society should push for transparent investigations and independent monitoring to ensure agencies are held accountable in political disputes.
