When Igbo Leaders Become Tools: How Internal Divisions Threaten Our Democracy
Igbo political figures have repeatedly undermined Nigeria’s democracy and our community’s strategic interests for personal gain or external influence. Court rulings and legal maneuvers have at times derailed party registrations and candidate ambitions, revealing an “enemy within.” Historical episodes—from the midnight injunction that annulled the June 12 election to the 1998 march backing military rule—illustrate a pattern of self-sabotage. More recent interventions against Southeast aspirants and internal legal battles continue to weaken our collective voice. With the 2027 elections approaching, ongoing challenges to key candidacies highlight persistent division. It’s time to overcome the “pull-him-down” syndrome, unite around shared goals, and safeguard both Igbo interests and Nigeria’s democracy.
