Dino Melaye Leads Protesters Singing Old National Anthem at Abuja “Occupy INEC” Rally

Dino Melaye Leads Protesters Singing Old National Anthem at Abuja “Occupy INEC” Rally — 1 of 2
1 / 2

A coalition of prominent Nigerian leaders gathered in Abuja under the banners “Occupy INEC” and “Save Our Democracy.” Former vice president Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi and Dino Melaye accused INEC of bias after the commission withdrew recognition of ADC’s leadership. At the peaceful rally, demonstrators chanted “Ojoro” to protest electoral malpractice. They held placards reading “Tinubu, why are you afraid?”, “Let democracy breathe,” and “Judges must give justice.” In a show of unity, they sang “Arise, O Compatriots,” the country’s former national anthem. Rotimi Amaechi urged citizens to defend democracy and warned against political manipulation. He stressed that credible, transparent elections are a collective duty. Analysts say the joint appearance of former rivals may signal early coalition-building ahead of 2027. Protesters demanded INEC’s independence and warned that any perceived bias could erode public trust. They called for accountability and stronger democratic institutions as Nigeria prepares for the next general elections.

What do you think is the real message behind leading protesters in singing the old anthem at Occupy INEC rally?

Are they trying to evoke nostalgia for past values or directly criticize the current electoral authorities?

I'm not sure there's a hidden message beyond nostalgia. Could it simply be a dramatic call for attention?

It's interesting that a coalition including Atiku, Obi and Kwankwaso chose symbolic anthem singing instead of directly confronting INEC's alleged bias with concrete demands.

Na passion dey show, but talking alone no go make INEC shift; we need solid legal action to hold them accountable.

If organizers want actual reform, they should document specific electoral irregularities, gather evidence, then present petitions or challenge INEC decisions in court.
