FCT Police Uncover Abuja Network Producing Fake Diplomatic and Government Plates

FCT Police Uncover Abuja Network Producing Fake Diplomatic and Government Plates

The FCT Police Command says it has uncovered a network producing and distributing fake diplomatic and government vehicle number plates in Abuja. Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi said the counterfeit plates, including ones marked “Presidency” and “Senator”, were allegedly used to evade security checks and enter restricted locations. Suspects are in custody and will be charged after investigations are completed. Police said buyers reportedly paid between ₦500,000 and ₦1.7 million for the plates. Investigators have identified suspected manufacturers operating outside the FCT and are working to arrest them. Residents have been urged to report vehicles with suspicious diplomatic registration numbers.

The arrest matters, but focusing only on the producers may miss the buyers and enablers who made the trade worthwhile.

Authorities should make plate verification faster for officers and publish clear reporting channels for suspicious government-numbered vehicles.
