Why Did Satan Tempt Jesus With What Already Belonged to God?
Matthew 4:1–11 describes Jesus fasting in the wilderness and being tempted by Satan. The temptations involved turning stones to bread, testing God’s protection by jumping from the temple, and receiving worldly kingdoms in exchange for worship. For Christians who believe Jesus is God, the passage raises a question: why would Satan offer Jesus things that already belong to God? Satan had known God before his fall, yet he still tried to tempt Jesus with hunger, power and worship. How do you understand this passage? Was Satan challenging Jesus’ humanity, his mission, or both?
