FG Halts 2027 WAEC and NECO Fee Hike After Public Backlash

FG Halts 2027 WAEC and NECO Fee Hike After Public Backlash — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The Federal Government has withdrawn its June letter proposing to raise WAEC and NECO registration fees from ₦27,500 to ₦50,000 in 2027. The Education Ministry says the fee review is on hold to allow wider consultations with exam bodies, state education offices, schools, parents and other stakeholders. The proposed 82% increase was driven by rising costs in logistics, security and printing of exam materials. The Minister of Education has directed that no adjustment take effect until all parties have been heard and the proposal has been thoroughly reviewed. Officials stress that students’ welfare and equitable access remain central to policy decisions. Nigerians will receive regular updates as discussions progress.

It's interesting that the ministry is framing this as wide consultation, though previous discussions seemed limited to insiders and officials only.

Halting the fee review might just delay the inevitable burden on students, rather than offering any real relief or cost-effective solution.

Schools and parents should form committees now to engage exam bodies directly, ensuring future fee hikes reflect actual operational costs.
