Adegboruwa Calls Lagos’s Forced Sanitation Lockdown Illegal

Adegboruwa Calls Lagos’s Forced Sanitation Lockdown Illegal

Senior Advocate Ebun Adegboruwa says the Lagos State Government’s directive forcing residents to stay indoors every last Saturday is unconstitutional. He alleges that police, LASTMA, health officers and even area boys were deployed to intimidate citizens exercising their right to free movement during the exercise. Adegboruwa points out that no published law empowers such a restriction and challenges the government to make its 2017 health law public for scrutiny. He argues that Lagos needs positive policy reforms, not coercive tactics reminiscent of outdated military-era rules.

What constitutional basis supports a state locking down residents for sanitation every last Saturday?

You're right, this measure sounds extreme. Hard to see constitutional support for forced sanitation lockdowns.

Are you pointing to any clause in the constitution that explicitly sanctions weekly sanitation lockdowns?

It's striking that area boys were used alongside police and health officers to intimidate citizens enforcing that sanitation directive.

I'm not fully convinced that sporadic lockdowns can't serve a public health purpose, even if implementation feels off.

Residents should document any intimidation incidents and file petitions to human rights commissions for accountability and legal review.
