Clearing the Record: Awolowo and the 1962 'Coup' Myth
Many still believe Chief Obafemi Awolowo planned a coup in 1962 and was jailed for it. This is false. No military officers were involved and no coup was attempted. The 1962 trial arose from a power struggle in the Western Region between Awolowo and S.L. Akintola. All 31 defendants were civilians, including politicians and journalists. Awolowo was convicted of treasonable felony, not for plotting a military takeover. The federal government declared a state of emergency after a breakdown of order in the Western House of Assembly. Historians view the trial as a political crackdown by the NCNC/NPC-led government rather than a genuine coup response.
