INEC Moves to Stay Deregistration of ADC and Four Other Parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission has asked the Court of Appeal in Abuja to suspend a Federal High Court ruling that ordered the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress and four other parties. INEC said it was surprised when the trial judge delivered the judgment despite an existing stay order. INEC supports the parties’ appeal. It told the court that it only heard of the verdict through media reports. ADC’s lead lawyer urged the appellate panel to sanction the trial judge for defying the hierarchy and protect the court’s integrity. The parties warned that, without a stay, by-elections in six states scheduled for June 20 could be jeopardised. The Court of Appeal is still hearing arguments. Aside from ADC, the affected parties are APP, AA, Accord and ZLP.

Why do you think INEC felt surprised by the trial judge's ruling on deregistering ADC and four other parties?

What in INEC's communications suggested they weren't ready for that court decision?

INEC's surprise statement seems to ignore its own role in monitoring party compliance before now.

Honestly, using surprise as a reason to stall a court ruling feels more like political manoeuvering than genuine concern.

INEC could improve transparency by publishing clear guidelines on compliance timelines before any court challenge.
