From Bariga Streets to NPFL Triumph: How MFM Shaped Ilechukwu’s Coaching Rise

From Bariga Streets to NPFL Triumph: How MFM Shaped Ilechukwu’s Coaching Rise

Fidelis Ilechukwu, known as “The Working One,” led Rangers International to the NPFL title in the 2023/2024 season and now sits atop the table with three games left. He started coaching by chance after funding a youth side in Bariga and stepping in to teach when his coach left. Without formal training, he learned leadership through captaining teams and guiding young players. A key moment came when Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries adopted his team near UNILAG and urged him to attend a course at the Nigeria Institute for Sports. Over 13 years with MFM, he progressed from grassroots football to the NPFL. After stints at Heartland and Plateau United, he returned to Enugu and credits those early days and MFM’s support for shaping his successful career.

Absolutely, his early Bariga drills must've built that grit and adaptability we see in his Rangers tactics.

Calling a lucky coaching start in Bariga the main reason for his title win feels a bit simplistic.

Youth clubs should focus on consistent funding and mentorship programs, following MFM's example to develop future NPFL coaches.
