Showunmi Calls for Reforms to Curb Governors’ and President’s Grip on Party Leadership

Otunba Segun Showunmi, a PDP chieftain from Ogun State, has condemned the growing control of party leadership by governors and the president. He argues that this trend undermines Nigeria’s democratic culture and weakens political institutions. Showunmi traced the problem back to the Obasanjo administration, when the president assumed party leadership and governors gained similar dominance at state level. He says this contradicts democratic norms and sidelines internal party structures. He warned that elected officials now dictate party affairs, making accountability difficult and fuelling internal crises and defections. Members feel excluded once power is secured. Showunmi has called for urgent reforms to separate executive authority from party management. He urged rebuilding political parties as independent democratic institutions to restore trust and stability.

Parties should set clear limits on executive interference by mandating open, rotating leadership elections at state and federal levels.
