Analyst Says 2027 Election May Pit Nigerians Against INEC as NDC Addresses Internal Crisis

Political analyst Chijioke Nwoye says the 2027 general election could become a contest between Nigerians and electoral institutions rather than a conventional battle among political parties. He alleged that opposition parties are being weakened through internal disputes, court cases and pressure from state agencies. Nwoye cited economic hardship, insecurity and public dissatisfaction as factors that could drive stronger voter participation. He also claimed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was facing obstacles as it works to secure its place on the ballot. The NDC has set up a seven-member reconciliation panel chaired by Prof. Pat Utomi to address disputes from its primaries, including the Edo South senatorial nomination. Lagos Central senatorial candidate Ladipo Johnson said the party's rapid growth and a tight submission timetable contributed to the crisis. Johnson also denied reports of a split between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, saying the Obidient and Kwankwasiyya movements remain united despite disagreements over access to coalition social-media accounts.
