My Experience with Osun’s Public Healthcare and the Fight Over Local Government Funds
In 2022, I returned from Lagos and stayed in Ere Ijesa in Oriade LGA. I fell sick and visited the town’s primary health centre. The nurse tested me for malaria and treated me free. She also dressed my wound and gave me an anti-tetanus injection. Recently, I went to the General Hospital in Ijebu Jesa. I paid ₦200 for a patient card and underwent a malaria test at the lab. After diagnosis, the nurse prescribed four drugs. The corper pharmacist provided two and I bought the rest for ₦1,100. All this public care costs the state government. Yet the FG has withheld over three years of local government allocations from Osun, worth more than ₦100 billion. If local elections have been held, there is no legal basis for the freeze. The FG should release the funds and let any dispute go to court. Appointing sole administrators without elections breaches the constitution. I believe fairness and the rule of law must guide these allocations.
