Femi Osofisan Thanks Well-Wishers After Overwhelming 80th Birthday Tributes

Nigerian playwright, scholar and poet Professor Femi Osofisan has thanked family, friends, colleagues, students and admirers for the overwhelming tributes that marked his 80th birthday on June 16, 2026. In a collective letter of gratitude, Osofisan said the scale of the celebrations and messages from Nigeria and abroad left him temporarily speechless. He said the goodwill came through prayers, calls, messages, visits and gifts. The veteran dramatist said he was deeply moved by the affection shown to him, despite having no political, royal or religious affiliation. He promised to thank people individually where possible, while acknowledging that the number of well-wishers may make it difficult to reach everyone. Osofisan is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading literary figures, with works spanning drama, fiction, poetry, criticism and journalism.
