House Calls for National Drone Policy to Boost Defence Manufacturing and Fight Insecurity
The House of Representatives has urged the creation of a National Drone Industrialisation Policy to strengthen Nigeria’s defence manufacturing and improve response to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, insurgency and pipeline vandalism. Lawmakers recommended financial support for indigenous UAV producers through the Bank of Industry, DICON and other funding platforms. They noted that local projects like the Tsaigumi drone need capital and policy backing to meet military procurement standards. A motion sponsored by a member of the House highlighted the rise of commercial drones in both security operations and attacks by extremist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP. This underscores the need for a strategic framework to develop home-grown drone technology. Committees on Defence, National Security and Intelligence, Science and Technology, Industry and Commerce have been mandated to draft the policy, pursue technology-transfer agreements with reputable international partners, establish Defence Industrial Zones, and review relevant laws on procurement, local content and investment incentives.
