Anambra Transport Commissioner Promises Protection and Introduces Smart Permit for Keke Riders

Anambra Transport Commissioner Promises Protection and Introduces Smart Permit for Keke Riders

Anambra State’s Transport Commissioner Edward Obiefuna Ibuzor has assured keke operators of full protection if they remain law-abiding. He spoke during a visit from the tricycle operators’ union, where members raised concerns about illegal levies and harassment. The ministry will convene a meeting next month with the Nigeria Police, Ocha Brigade, and Anti-Touting Squad to reduce roadside stops. Ibuzor also urged riders to save regularly, avoid spending on charms, and take adequate rest for their health. A new smart rider’s permit costing ₦5,250 will store operator details and payment records. Applications will be processed online, allowing riders to register from any location. Union leaders welcomed the reforms, praising improved numbering and park management. They appealed for lower permit fees and stricter enforcement to weed out criminal elements among operators.

I'm curious about how the permit's verification process will stop unauthorized levies on riders?

It's surprising the commissioner waits for complaints before tackling extortion; this approach seems reactive rather than preventive.

Operators should document every instance of harassment and share reports with the ministry to ensure follow-up on those illegal levies.
