Lakurawa Attack on Sokoto Community Kills Police Officer, Two Residents
Suspected Lakurawa terrorists attacked Girkau community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Monday, August 3, 2026. A police officer and two residents were killed, while several others were injured. The attackers reportedly set fire to two security vehicles belonging to the Nigeria Police Force and the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps. Police spokesperson Ahmed Rufai said operatives responded to a distress call, engaged the attackers in a gun battle and repelled them. Residents identified the victims as police officer Hussaini Manyu, an elderly resident, Bala Wakili, and a young herder who was allegedly shot after refusing to surrender his cattle. A farmer was also reportedly injured, while a woman was allegedly assaulted after resisting an attempted sexual assault. Community members said the attackers stole cattle and that residents had previously reported suspicious movements in the area. They called for stronger security deployment as many villagers have fled in fear.
