Across Iran and Iraq: Funeral Processions for Khamenei Begin amid Calls for Revenge
From July 3, millions are expected to join seven days of funeral processions for Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, killed in a US-Israeli attack on February 28. Official rites and ceremonies will move from Tehran to Qom in Iran, then to Najaf and Karbala in Iraq, and conclude with burial on July 9 at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad. Security in Tehran has been raised to maximum alert. General Ahmad Vahidi, the newly appointed IRGC commander-in-chief, made his first public appearance since February beside Khamenei’s coffin. Armed forces chief Amir Hatami pledged revenge against the US and Israel. State media showed mourners brushing scarves against Khamenei’s flag-draped coffin for blessings. A red “Ya Hussein” flag over the coffin symbolized both martyrdom and a call for vengeance.
