PDP Elders Sue INEC for Refusing to Recognise Turaki-Led Interim Leadership
Some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elders, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, have taken the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to a Federal High Court in Abuja. They accuse INEC of ignoring valid court orders to update its records and accept the interim National Working Committee (NWC) headed by Tanimu Turaki. Filed on June 4 by Chief Chris Uche (SAN), the suit demands that INEC recognise letters sent in early May by the PDP’s Board of Trustees and National Executive Committee. The plaintiffs include former governors, ministers and senior party figures who say the commission defied a June 3 Court of Appeal ruling that confirmed the interim NWC. They argue that INEC’s refusal undermines the rule of law and leaves the party in a leadership vacuum. The PDP elders want a court declaration compelling INEC to implement all relevant judgments and reflect the interim leadership in its official records.
