IPU Clarifies No Political Motive in Isan-Ekiti Football Tragedy

The Isan Progressives Union (IPU) received with deep shock the death of a young community member during a football match at a primary school pitch in Isan-Ekiti on Friday, 19 June 2026. We sympathise with the bereaved family, the Kabiyesi-in-Council, and all residents over this painful loss. We stress that this incident arose from a misunderstanding between two locals, not from any political motive. Its timing on the eve of the Ekiti State election is purely coincidental. We call on media, political actors, and community members to avoid politicising this tragic event. To ensure accountability, the IPU has met with community leaders and the deceased’s family and is working with security authorities for a full investigation. We urge all sons and daughters of Isan-Ekiti, at home and abroad, to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding while authorities carry out their work. May the departed rest in peace, and may unity and harmony prevail in our community.
