NOUN to Award Degrees to 56 Inmates at 15th Convocation

NOUN to Award Degrees to 56 Inmates at 15th Convocation

The National Open University of Nigeria will award degrees to 56 inmates from correctional centres at its 15th convocation on April 18. The ceremony will be held across multiple study centres and will include 24,575 graduates in total. This initiative reflects NOUN’s inclusive policy of offering second chances through education. The Vice-Chancellor emphasised that no one is beyond redemption and described the programme as a “quiet revolution” in distance learning. By extending academic programmes into correctional facilities, NOUN aims to restore dignity and facilitate reintegration. Certificates will be issued immediately after the ceremony, highlighting the university’s commitment to efficiency and student-focused service.

What impact do you think awarding degrees to 56 inmates will have on rehabilitation and recidivism rates across the country?

I dey feel this move – giving inmates degrees go boost their confidence and help dem stay on better path, reduce returns for sure.

Hardly sure 56 degrees alone will shift national recidivism trends; systemic support and tailored programs matter more than titles.

Noting that this initiative covers just 56 inmates out of over 24,000 graduates, it seems more symbolic than structural reform.

Are we sure this can't divert resources from other deserving students or does it really balance fairness and opportunity?

Perhaps correctional centres can partner with local study centres to offer more flexible schedules and support for inmate learners.
