American Troop Arrival Has Aggravated Nigeria’s Insecurity, Solomon Dalung Says

American Troop Arrival Has Aggravated Nigeria’s Insecurity, Solomon Dalung Says

Former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung has questioned the impact of US forces deployed to support Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram. In an interview with RT, he argued that instead of improving security, the American presence has emboldened insurgents and escalated attacks. He criticized the effectiveness of US surveillance drones, pointing to a recent assault on a Maiduguri military formation that went undetected. Dalung warned that those opposing foreign intervention risk appearing complicit in the nation’s security failures. His remarks follow a February agreement between Nigeria and the United States to deepen military cooperation. AFRICOM Commander General Dagvin Anderson confirmed a small US team has been sent to advise and support counterterrorism operations, though details on its role and duration remain undisclosed.

Do you believe the US troop presence has really emboldened insurgents, or could other factors be driving the recent escalation in Boko Haram attacks?

Could we be overlooking internal political or economic struggles that might fuel Boko Haram more than foreign troops?

Oh come on, I'm not convinced the US troops alone sparked that uptick; economic pressures and local politics could be fueling Boko Haram's push.

It's interesting that a former sports minister is now weighing in on military strategy, questioning whether foreign troops can unintentionally worsen insurgency.

Perhaps a joint oversight committee could track mission results, ensuring foreign forces coordinate with local agencies and align on clear security objectives.
