Igbo Community Elects New Leadership, Seeks Stronger Ties with Cross River State Government
The Igbo community in Cross River State has called for deeper ties with the state government and local people as part of efforts to advance shared interests and ensure peaceful coexistence. Speaking after the election of a new leadership in Calabar, the President-General of the Cross River chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Chukwuemeka Egwuonwu, affirmed that Igbos have found a home in the state. He urged members to live peacefully with their neighbours and support government policies that deliver democratic dividends. A key priority highlighted was the construction of a permanent Igbo Community Hall in Calabar. Community chiefs appealed to the governor to restore the land allocated for this project, while the new president, Chief Kenneth Okpalaeke, pledged to mobilise members through voluntary contributions and focus on unity, self-reliance, and welfare programmes for the elderly and vulnerable.
