Tinubu Joins U.S. Request for More Time in Drug-Records Release Case
President Bola Tinubu joined a request by the U.S. Department of Justice for a 10-day extension to respond to a motion seeking the release of records connected to long-running drug-trafficking allegations. Tinubu’s legal team asked to remain on the same response schedule as the U.S. government defendants in the records-release case. A U.S. District Judge later denied the extension request, according to the court filing cited in the report. The records sought relate to past U.S. investigations and a 1993 civil asset-forfeiture order involving $460,000 held in an account in Tinubu’s name. Tinubu has consistently denied any involvement in drug trafficking. His lawyers argue that the forfeiture was a civil action against the funds, not a criminal case against him, and that he was never arrested, indicted or convicted of a drug offence in the United States. The latest filing concerns the timetable for court responses and does not itself determine the truth of the allegations.
