Peter Obi Says Hunger and Poverty Have Worsened Under Tinubu

Peter Obi has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s remark that hunger has always existed in Nigeria, calling it insensitive amid worsening economic hardship. In a statement, Obi said hunger and poverty were already serious before Tinubu took office in 2023, driven by insecurity, conflict, banditry and floods. He claimed that the number of Nigerians facing acute food insecurity has risen from about 17 million to 35 million under the current administration. Obi also argued that extreme poverty has deepened, blaming poor economic management, wasteful public spending, insecurity and weak investment in productive sectors. He urged the government to prioritise education, healthcare, agriculture, security, small businesses, job creation and increased production. He said leadership should be judged by results, not only by the challenges inherited.
