NUPENG Elects Comrade Salimon Oladiti as New President

NUPENG Elects Comrade Salimon Oladiti as New President

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers has elected Comrade Salimon Oladiti as its new president for a four-year term. He succeeds Comrade Williams Akporeha after an eight-year tenure. Oladiti, who previously served as a National Trustee, was voted in during NUPENG’s 6th Quadrennial Delegates Conference in Lagos. Comrade Akin Oladejo, former chairman of the Oil and Gas Supply Branch, will serve as deputy president. This leadership change comes amid refinery expansions, market reforms and the ongoing energy transition. The outgoing president urged the federal government to tackle rising insecurity, petroleum truck hijackings and poor road conditions that affect workers’ welfare and investment. Conference participants called on the new team to defend workers’ rights, enhance welfare and uphold the union’s core values.

Absolutely, boosting wage fairness, ensuring workplace safety and strengthening collective bargaining can tackle workers' key concerns over the next term.

Fix focus on four-year term seems off—shouldn't his priority be tackling urgent wage concerns now, not planning for years ahead?

Noting the long tenure of his predecessor, it's unclear if Oladiti will steer the union toward meaningful policy changes.

A new face in the presidency doesn't guarantee fresh ideas if the same old structures remain unchallenged.

To keep momentum, dem need to outline clear performance metrics, schedule regular town hall updates, and report progress transparently.
