UK Councillor Charged Over Alleged Racist Social-Media Post About Nigerians

Reform UK councillor Glenn Gibbins of Sunderland has been charged over an alleged grossly offensive social-media post referencing Nigerians. Northumbria Police said the post was made in 2024 and was reported in May 2026, shortly after Gibbins was elected. The Crown Prosecution Service later authorised the charge under the Communications Act 2003. Gibbins, 66, is scheduled to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on 21 August. Police have asked the public not to speculate while the case is before the court. The case has also raised questions about Reform UK's decision to reinstate Gibbins following an internal disciplinary process.

The timing stands out: the post was reportedly from 2024, but the report came shortly after his election in 2026.

A charge is serious, but it is still an allegation; people should avoid treating the case as settled before court proceedings.

Residents and party officials should follow the case closely, rely on verified updates, and judge any response by due process.
