Beyond First Place: My Historic 1976 Triumph and the True Meaning of Winning
I joined IICC Shooting Stars FC of Ibadan in 1974 while studying mechanical engineering at The Polytechnic, Ibadan. Balancing rigorous training with my studies paid my fees and defined my path. During my NYSC year in 1976, we won both the Nigerian league and the African Cup Winners’ Cup. I scored seven of our 16 goals in regulation time, helping secure Nigeria’s first continental club trophy. As defending champions, political decisions saw us in the Cup Winners’ Cup and opened the Champions Club Cup to our Ibadan rivals, Water Corporation FC. They impressed on the continental stage, and their coach, Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, went on to lead the national team. Our semi-final clash with Rangers FC ended goalless over two legs and went to penalties in Kaduna. Despite dominating play, Emmanuel Okala’s heroics cost us the trophy. Back in Ibadan, the governor awarded each of the 22 players a new car, teaching us that true victory lies in effort, performance, and sportsmanship.
