Why Daniel Bwala Owes an Apology to Nigerians Working in UK Care Homes

Why Daniel Bwala Owes an Apology to Nigerians Working in UK Care Homes

Nigeria once urged citizens to stay and build the nation despite economic hardship. Yet, officials now blame those who migrate, calling their work abroad miserable or akin to slavery. Daniel Bwala, the president’s special adviser on policy communication, labelled care work by Nigerians in UK homes “modern-day slavery.” His comparison of monthly salaries in the UK to low pay in Nigeria ignored basic facts and showed a troubling misunderstanding of migration realities and the dignity of labour. These remarks have sparked outrage at home and abroad. Rather than discourage migration through false narratives, the government should address the root causes that drive millions of Nigerians to seek better opportunities overseas.

Has anyone else thought about why Daniel Bwala's remarks on UK care homes came across as dismissive to hardworking Nigerians abroad?
