Ogun Court Jails 14 Illegal Dumpers for 14 Days or ₦20,000 Fine
A magistrate court in Isabo, Abeokuta, has sentenced fourteen individuals to 14 days’ imprisonment each for illegally dumping refuse on public roads and drainages. They include Kareem Sherifat, Isiwat Ololade, Ojanuga Esther, Usman Babatunde and nine others. The prosecutor explained that the offenders were arrested at Tekobo in Idi-Aba after creating offensive odours, attracting flies and blocking drains. Their actions posed serious health risks, including potential cholera outbreaks and flooding, in violation of the Ogun State Public Health Law 2006 and the Waste Management Authority Law 2020. Magistrate O. Sam-Obaleye found them guilty on two counts and ruled that each convict serve 14 days behind bars or pay a ₦10,000 fine per count. The court warned that repeat offenders will face imprisonment without the option of a fine and urged the public to maintain proper waste disposal.
