Ogilisi Igbo Proposes ‘Igbo Nation’ Instead of ‘Biafra’ Identity
Ogilisi Igbo, a spiritual leader, urges Ndigbo to rethink using the name “Biafra.” He argues it now symbolizes pain, loss, and prolonged struggle instead of unity. He warns that the term carries spiritual burdens tied to its origins in the Bights of Bonny, Benin, and Biafra. He encourages communities to consult traditional seers and diviners before embracing it. Recalling the civil war’s devastating toll on Igbo lives and the conflicts since 1970, he says the name remains linked to suffering. He also cautions against framing the struggle around individual leaders, which deepens division. As an alternative, he proposes adopting “Igbo Nation” as a cultural and spiritual identity. He believes this rebranding can foster solidarity among Igbos at home and abroad without the emotional burdens tied to “Biafra.”
